Meet Gorblin Mossbeard!

“Well, hello there, little rock star! I’m Gorblin Mossbeard. I’m a 437-year-old Wizard, and I live in a cosy cottage deep in the forest. I like mushrooms, cups of tea and collecting interesting rocks, crystals, feathers and sticks. I also like quiet mornings and slow living… but I suppose a crystal adventure with you would be rather lovely. Inside this book, we’ll discover crystals with wonderful colours, curious shapes and stories to tell. You can colour them as they look in nature, or dream up colours of your own. Purple, rainbow or spotty—it’s your adventure! Fetch your pens and pencils. I’ll put the kettle on. Let’s see what treasures we can find!

A purple crystal treasure

Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz. It can be pale lilac or deep violet, and sometimes grows inside hollow rocks called geodes. Lots of the amethyst you see in crystal shops comes from Brazil. Beautiful amethyst is also found in Uruguay and other parts of the world.

A rainbow surprise

Precious opal can flash red, green, blue and other colours as you turn it in the light. This dazzling effect is called “play-of-colour”. Common opal is beautiful too, but doesn’t have these rainbow flashes.

A note for grown-ups

Discover together.

Follow your little explorer’s interests—there’s no need to finish the pages in order or colour every crystal realistically. Pencils and crayons work beautifully; pop a spare sheet behind the page when trying felt-tip pens.

The book introduces geological facts alongside traditional crystal associations, presented as cultural beliefs. Supervise children when exploring real specimens and keep small stones away from mouths.
